Dr. Silegy

What Makes Dr. Tim Silegy Stand Out From the Rest?

When you need dental impact to improve your oral health, your upper jaw needs enough bone structure to support the implant. Sometimes bone loss can occur, or the sinuses are too close to the jaw. A sinus list becomes necessary to create a solid foundation for implants. This procedure adds bone to the upper jaw, ensuring there’s enough support for the implant and preventing any future issues, such as further bone loss. Understanding the need for a sinus lift and the process involved can help ease any concerns and help you achieve a healthier smile.

At Silegy OMFS, we understand that undergoing a sinus lift may feel overwhelming. Our compassionate team is here to guide you through every step, ensuring you receive the personalized care you deserve.

What Is a Sinus Lift?

A sinus lift, also known as sinus augmentation, is a surgical procedure that adds bone to the upper jaw in the area where molars and premolars are located. This is typically done when there isn’t enough bone height in the upper jaw or the sinuses are too close to the jaw for dental implants to be placed.

Why Is a Sinus Lift Needed?

Sinus lifts are necessary to help address the following issues:

Tooth Loss and Bone Restoration

When you lose a tooth, particularly in the upper jaw, the bone that once supported the tooth can start to resorb or shrink. This bone loss can leave insufficient bone height to support a dental implant. A sinus lift helps to:

  • Replace lost bone
  • Prevent further bone loss

The restoration of bone height is essential for the stable placement of dental implants.

Proximity of Sinuses to Upper Jaw

The maxillary sinuses are located just above your upper back teeth. In some cases, the sinuses can be too close to the jaw for implants to be placed safely. This proximity can cause:

  • Risk of sinus perforation
  • Inadequate support for implants

A sinus lift creates the necessary space and support for successful implant placement.

Sinus Lift Procedure Overview

Before undergoing a sinus lift, Dr. Silegy will conduct a thorough examination, including X-rays or CT scans, to evaluate the structure of your jaw and sinuses. This examination helps plan the surgery with precision and determines the amount of bone graft material needed.

A sinus lift procedure involves several steps, including:

  • Incision and Access: Dr. Silegy makes an incision in the gum tissue to expose the bone. This incision is usually made on the side of the upper jaw where the bone graft will be placed.
  • Creating an Opening: A small, oval window is then created in the bone to access the sinus membrane. This delicate membrane lines the sinus cavity and needs to be handled with care.
  • Lifting the Sinus Membrane: The sinus membrane is gently lifted upward, creating space between the sinus floor and jawbone.
  • Placing the Bone Graft: Bone graft material is then placed into the newly created space. This graft material can be synthetic, from a donor, or taken from another part of your body. The graft will eventually integrate with your natural bone, providing the necessary support for dental implants.
  • Closing the Incision: The gum tissue is sutured back into place, and the healing process begins.

After the procedure, it’s important to follow the post-operative instructions to ensure proper healing. Some patients may experience swelling and discomfort, which can be managed with prescription medications. It’s also important to avoid activities that could disturb the sinus area, such as blowing your nose or sneezing forcefully.

What Questions Should You Ask Before Getting a Sinus Lift?

Before getting a sinus lift, it’s important to understand the procedure and whether it’s the right choice for your dental health. Some questions you could ask to make an informed decision include:

What Is the Expected Outcome?

Inquiring about outcomes will help you understand the purpose of the sinus lift and how it can improve your dental implant options.

What Are the Risks and Complications?

Asking about potential risks and complications will ensure you understand how this procedure may impact you. This information can also help you weigh your options for whether or not this procedure is the right fit for you.

What Could the Recovery Process Look for You?

While there is a general sense of the recovery process for a sinus lift, everyone reacts differently, and your surgeon will be able to provide a clear picture of what your healing process will look like.

How Long Until You Can Get Dental Implants?

Determining the waiting period after the sinus lift before you can proceed with dental implants allows you to plan your treatment timeline and determine how this may impact your daily responsibilities.
